We grow great by dreams. All big men are dreamers. They see things in the soft haze of a spring day or in the red fire of a long winter’s evening. Some of us let these great dreams die, but others nourish and protect them

Howell finds musical outlet through friends, Myspace

By Brandon Hicks

Cody Howell, despite his quiet demeanor, is an impressive standout due to his musical talents.  Howell has had a guitar glued to his left hand and a guitar pick stuck in his right for a long time, ever since he was 15 and hasn’t put either down since.

In this case, Howell hasn’t fallen from the apple tree, so to speak. Both of his parents are musically talented; Howell inherited his voice from his mother and guitar skills from his father. Today, he spreads his music through the MySpace circuit, headlined as “The Howell Project.”

He records his music through recording software that he downloaded on his computer. Howell’s become fairly popular on MySpace and averages around 25 plays a day.

He also plays for his friends on a regular basis and travels with his guitar strapped in the backseat of his car, like a passenger. You could say this Fender is one of Cody’s closest friends. And he’s not known for leaving his guitar lying around just anywhere. If they made a car seat for guitars, he said he would be the first to purchase one.

Howell sings with confidence in his voice and shares his life experiences through his lyrics… “I try to be honest when it comes to my music and lyrics,” he said.

“My songs could be about a situation, past experiences, or even life in general.”

His music is a type of alternative mixed with his very own originality.

After high school, he hopes to eventually play in coffee shops, clubs, and various other places.  Howell said he hopes to ‘make it big’ in the music industry, but he claims he will be personally satisfied as long as he can share his music.

Although he isn’t the most extroverted person in the world, Howell has no problem expressing himself through his music.

In a way, Howell’s friends might claim that he has split personalities.  He isn’t a very talkative person at school, but if you stick a guitar in his hands and give him a microphone, he’ll never keep quiet.

Howell also has a way of capturing an audience with his catchy tunes. That is, although he’s shy, he has no trouble playing the songs for the ladies, his friends say. You can always count on Howell coming out with a new hit every Valentine’s Day for his Valentine.

Who knows?  Maybe next year the song could be about you!

Howell’s musical influences are John Mayer, Gavin Degraw, and Jack Johnson.

His musical talents consist of singing, playing guitar, keyboard, and even the piano.

Howell will be attending Jacksonville State University this fall and looks forward to pursuing his career in music.
